This unit was created for a third grade social studies class. The purpose of this unit is to explore the many facets of the topic of immigration. This unit is comprised of five lessons--each covering a different topic of immigration. The essential question and take away from this unit is "What is the immigration experience in America?". The topics include what immigration is and who immigrates, the factors that cause people to immigrate, how to become a citizen of the United States--past and present, the life of an immigrant, and immigration from a whole country perspective--how to prepare for immigrants.
With immigration being an ever popular topic of discussion, I chose immigration as the topic of my unit because it is relevant to the students lives. Chances are every student in my classroom is directly effected by immigration--their ancestors immigrated to the United States, they know someone who immigrated to the United States, or they are an immigrant themselves. I also chose the topic of immigration because I think it is important for students to understand the complexity of becoming a citizen of the United States and to allow them to gain an understanding of the lives of many people currently living in the United States.
